HIV Certification Training

HIV Certification trainings are for teachers who are responsible for instruction of students’ reproductive health, sexuality education, and/or HIV/AIDS education. State law mandates that every public school district provide HIV Prevention education at every building level (elementary, middle and high school). State law also requires that anyone providing HIV/AIDS education to K-12 students shall have training in HIV and AIDS education for young people (§380.1169). Completion of this course fulfills the state requirement for teacher training in HIV/AIDS education. MDE recommends recertification every 5 years. These trainings provide participants with an overview of the law for HIV Prevention and Sex Education, HIV/STIs in Michigan, and foundational approaches to teaching effective HIV prevention and Sex Education, including answering student questions. Participants will understand the law as it pertains to Sex Education and HIV Prevention in the school setting, comprehend basic HIV/STIs trends in Michigan, and build their professional disposition around teaching this topic with youth. In preparation for this course, participants should know what curricula their local School Board has approved.
