This three-day professional development series is designed to enhance high school algebra instruction by focusing on conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and strategic application. Participants will engage with NCTM’s Effective Teaching Practices to create a classroom environment that fosters mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. By the end of the series, participants will have a collection of strategies and resources to enhance student engagement and understanding in Algebra 1 and 2, apply effective teaching practices for diverse learners, and foster a classroom culture that values mathematical discourse and exploration. Day 1: Building Number Sense in Algebra Implement number sense routines to strengthen students’ understanding of algebraic concepts. Explore strategies for developing flexible thinking around variables and expressions. Day 2: Functions and Their Representations Delve into multiple representations of functions, including graphical, numerical, and analytical. Utilize appropriate tools strategically to model real-world scenarios. Day 3: Equations, Inequalities, and Mathematical Modeling Engage in tasks that promote reasoning and problem-solving with equations and inequalities. Incorporate mathematical modeling to connect algebraic concepts to real-life contexts.
