Early Math Essential Practices 2024-2025

This learning is intended to support educators as they work to enhance how children learn to use, understand, and do mathematics using a strengths-based approach. This learning will help teachers from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5 prompt shifts in systems, learning, teaching, and assessment so that every child develops early solid mathematical understanding, skills, and dispositions. This professional learning will connect the Essential practices with research and recommendations from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the National Research Council (NRC). Teachers will learn the skills to reframe the mathematics teaching and learning that takes place in their classrooms and think beyond debates about telling versus not telling, discovery versus direct instruction, play-based versus structured. This day of professional learning will serve as a guidepost to shift educators toward a focus on working together and with families to enhance how we support, recognize, and use children’s mathematical thinking and the varied ways in which children express their thoughts.
